A post that am really proud of : Global Economic Crisis

I wrote this on July 19, 2009 after reading a Paul Krugman column in The Hindu . And interestingly this was my first blog post ever.

It was about how the recession would affect the face of the world that we know of . I had limited understanding of macroeconomics then ( Am still no expert !!! ) , but still was able to capture the currents , thanks to columns of Paul Krugman, Thomas Friedman who took it as their task to explain to commoners on what was happening with the world.

So here is my post :

// In the current scenario of global recession, the most hit is not the banks which wrecked due to their toxic assets, not the hedge funds which played with imaginary assets and certainly not the egoistic, narcissistic Neo-liberals but the workers belonging to the middle-class,all over the world.

"Socializing pains and Privatizing gains",would happen in recessional and post-recessional periods. The carefree spending of countries on bailouts would be dubbed as welfare schemes and common people would bear the brunt of balancing the fiscal deficit due to bailing out fiscally non-compliant MNC's. This would then lead to a vicious circle of lower spending due to high taxes,lay-off's in name of company restructuring and couple that with inherently faulty system of oil futures trading and disastrous energy policy of converting food crops to fuel, which would automatically lead to higher food prices. Here is going to be a generation in developed world where they are going to be worse off than their previous generation.

Hence this recession would prove to be a breeding ground forultra-nationalism and xenophobic societies which would defeat the whole concept of Globalization itself.

In my view,to tackle recession we need to have better regulated financial systems, time tested financial instruments, highly invasive micro-financial systems to empower people, An independent World Bank and IMF in contrast to their current functioning which is to act as a proxy US financial corporation catering to the needs of US by clinging to ever failing dollar economy and upholding its(US) hegemony in global financial system in the world.

Thus we need to rethink about the existing monetary policies, redraw contours of global trade and relive the glorious periods of regulated financial systems and better social welfare schemes which increased the real buying power of people across the world and alleviated people from poverty. //

Though I could see that some strong words came from me, it was my reaction to the news which I had seen on newspapers on a daily basis, more of a reactionary outburst you could say. But still am surprised for some projections which I had mentioned is now a reality in Southern Europe.

The Last Concert - Is this a start to many Ends?

Citizen of any nation always have a love and hate relationship with its public broadcaster, say BBC or France Televisions or even Door darshan. But one thing that no one could stand is bringing down the broadcaster itself.

Imagine, you are watching TV on a fine evening and suddenly the transmission gets interrupted by a public service announcement. And it says "Sorry Folks! From tomorrow the National television Network you are seeing cease to exist ". What would be our reaction in spite of our grumblings towards abysmal content they provide.

The Reaction would be 'Explosive' and that's what Greeks are expressing on streets.

By the way, why are they giving a performance with teary eyes that does make our soul stir a bit ?

Because, it is probably the last time they are going to perform before a National Audience in a Public Broadcast Network.

In view of austerity measures which the Greece government has been taking over months, here is the next blow. The Closure of Public Broadcaster.

The Greek government last week closed the country’s public broadcasting network, ERT and laid off all of its nearly 2,700 employees, among the casualties was the Greek National Symphony Orchestra and Chorus.

And the announcement was given on the evening just the day before the closure. Hard to believe. Yet true.

With the public broadcaster coming down, is this start of many ends which the citizens of Greece are going to face.

Open Appeal :

// Dear colleagues, fellow artists, musicians and managerial staff of State Radio Television Broadcasters worldwide,
This is a communication letter from all 3 Music Ensembles of the Greek Radio Television (ERT), which as you already know is now SHUT DOWN after a government decree. As of Tuesday the 11th of June 2013 the “National Symphony Orchestra” (est. 1938), the “Contemporary Music Orchestra” (est. 1954) and the Choir (est. 1977) of ERT have ceased their activities. The new institution that is proposed at the moment from the government there is no room for music whatsoever. Our very existence is at stake. We are asking for help and solidarity in any possible way. It is of the utmost importance to make them understand why a Public Television should include Music Ensembles. We would mostly appreciate a written formal statement of support (in both email and normal post if possible) addressed to the Greek government (Prime Minister’s Office, Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Culture, Ministry of State, GENERAL SECRETARIAT OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION) and to your own respective governments as means of applying pressure for the existence and functioning of the Music Ensembles and ERT in general. A European country’s decision to shut down its national Broadcaster constitutes a major strike against democracy and culture that concerns all of us.
Music Ensembles of European Radio Television traditionally are pillars of civilization.
The unhindered artistic creation and freedom of expression is an essential part of the human existence.
By The Musicians, Choristers and Managerial Staff of the Music Ensembles of ERT
PS. The importance of the situation demands your immediate response
Please communicate every action to the email of the Artistic Director of the Music Ensembles of ERT .

Public Opinion - 1 : European Union

European Union

It has always been an Utopia- sortie for Indians like me, for we always associate liberal ideals and ethical fairness with the word 'Europe'.

Right from the start of the millennium, EU has always been in news, world over , with its Unitary currency Euro coming into global basket of currencies.

Being a coin collector, I still can remember the frenetic pace at which the demand for Marks, Francs increased in the years to come, for they had adopted Euro.

Cut the story short, now EU is in news for all the wrong reasons like skeptics questioning the stability of EU itself, rise in unemployment numbers, re-emergence of Nazi- like parties in Greece (Rise of the Greek neo-Nazis: Ultra-right party Golden Dawn wants to force immigrants into work camps and plant landmines along Turkish border ).

Along with above said, the divide between Northern countries ( Germany, Belgium, France, Netherlands ) and Southern countries ( Greece, Italy, Spain, Portugal ) is fast increasing .

With Germany performing better than the rest of the Europe, people have started to harp the old tunes of supposed German supremacy and wildly imaginary tales of Germany trying to impose hard austerity measures over errant countries.

But contrary to the widespread view, public view in Europe is vastly different from what we would have imagined.

Here are the conclusions that have come out of a study by Pew Research Global Attitudes project.

1. The faith in common currency Euro is unshaken

2. People are willing to accept austerity measures to reduce public debts.

3.  Contrary to the supposed belief, it is the French who are increasingly disillusioned with the current state of economy

And most of all People believe that Germany is the most trustworthy nation

Wish European Union emerge stronger from the ensuing crises.
